Opportunities for Fellowship

Second Presbyterian organist Douglas Murray will play a half-hour that will serve as a prelude to Evensong, a choral service containing prayers, scripture readings, hymns and anthems: a chanted psalm, a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Luke 1:46-55 and 2:29-32), and several additional pieces. This liturgy lasts about 40 minutes.
You may park in the church lot, in the Southern Baptist Sunday school lot or in the Hotel Tempo lot.
The program:
For this recital, Douglas Murray has created what he calls a composite sonata: three movements from British organ sonatas written between 1895 and 1933. The program opens with the Allegro Maestoso from Edward Elgar's Sonata in G, a tuneful composition that moves between rollicking good fun and quiet peacefulness. Then follows the contrasting second movement (Quasi lento, tranquillo) of Herbert Howells's organ sonata, at first meditative, then rising in complexity and excitement to a shattering climax, followed by a return of peace. The recital concludes with the finale of Charles Villiers Stanford's Sonata Celtica, a piece celebrating Stanford's Irish heritage.
And yet, it is there. A thread of light in an ordinary moment. Beauty waiting to be noticed. A voice beside us. A breath, a memory, a glimpse of something wondrous. A reminder that sorrow and joy can inhabit the same heart, sometimes at the very same time.
Threads of Joy is an invitation to notice these threads—to follow them through darkness and light, through grief and wonder, through the difficult days and the days that surprise us with their beauty.
Because tomorrow is always a new and different day. And perhaps the joy we seek is not something we must create, but something we learn to see.
May we leave this music remembering that we are connected, that we are not alone, and that each of us is a thread in the beautiful, unfinished tapestry of this life.
