“'Allow the children to come to me,' Jesus said. 'Don’t forbid them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these children.'” Matthew 19:14, NSRV
Second welcomes children as a vital to this community of believers. Children are spiritual beings who encounter God in their own unique ways and who actively participate in the worship, learning, and service of this community.
10:00am Sunday Worship
Children are invited to begin the 10:00 worship service in the sanctuary. The children’s bookshelf outside the narthex provides children’s books and bibles, crayons and coloring pages. Children ages 3-8 are invited to depart for Children’s Worship after the Time for Children portion of the service. Children's Worship is based on a Montessori style curriculum called Godly Play which leads them through a storytelling experience using wooden figures that encourages them to respond playfully. Ages 3-4 years meet in the Godly Play room on the first floor of the Christian Education wing. Children ages 5-8 years meet in the Godly Play room across from the Prayer Room.
9:30am Sunday School and the Peaceable Kingdom during the school year.
From September-May, all of our Sunday School classes meet from 9:30 am - 10:30 am. In order to keep the children entrusted to us safe, we ask parents to keep an up-to-date registration form on file with us.
Our preschool class for children 3-5 years old meets on the first floor of the Christian Education wing. We use the Growing in Grace curriculum, which focuses on a transformational presentation of the gospel encouraging justice, hospitality, and expressing God's grace.
Our 1st - 6th grade Sunday School meets in the Peaceable Kingdom. We use a rotation model to engage our children deeply in one Bible story over four weeks. Each week the children hear the story anew and connect with it using a different activity — art, drama, cooking, science, games, music, and more. Repetition promotes learning and encourages a deeper engagement with the text.
For our littlest ones (infants - 2 years old), paid nursery staff provide childcare from 10:00am – 11:15pm. They assure that the children’s first church experience is a warm, loving one. The nursery is equipped with an adjoining crib room, and a rocking chair for nursing mothers. Pagers are available to ensure your peace of mind during worship and/or Sunday School.
The congregation is the primary choir of the church. All people are given a voice and deserve the opportunity to learn to use it well. Childhood is the best time to begin this process! At 2PC, children and youth gain musical skills through reading music, ear training, and by singing well in unison and in harmony. Through carefully chosen texts, both scriptural and poetic, they learn the basic tenets of the Christian faith. Young Singers (boys and girls, grades 1-6) meets on Sundays from 5-6 pm, sings in worship several times each year, and plays a major musical role in the annual Christmas pageant.
Fifth & Sixth Grade Fellowship
Our 5th and 6th grade children are invited to participate in a monthly gathering for dinner, games, and service learning opportunities. We connect with local organizations that tackle issues facing vulnerable populations in our city to help our students become aware, compassionate, and engaged Christians.
